After-School
Programs
for school-aged youth
have been integral to the settlement house movement, and USES has
offered an After-School Program at 48 Rutland Street for over 30 years,
providing continuous service and support for parents who work or attend
school or training. The After-School Program offers structured, thematic
children’s activities for four hours on school days, and 10 hours
during school vacations. The majority of program participants are
African-American, and many are Latino and African immigrant children.

Artful Transformations Program
The Artful Transformations Program serves young people by facilitating an engagement with the
arts as an incentive toward health and hope for a positive future. The
young people in this program may have
already crossed the line into social, academic or legal difficulties.
These youth and their families live in the Greater Boston area and
struggle with challenges born of poverty, displacement, language
barriers and public health concerns. The program helps young people be
successful in all areas of their lives through skill-building in the
arts, art-making, performance, and exhibition of their work.

Cultural activity has long played a
critical role in the lives of our participants and the South End/Lower
Roxbury neighborhood. USES’ Children’s Art Centre (CAC) has been a
prominent player in that tradition for many years. Set in a beautiful
South End courtyard, with floor-to-ceiling French doors spanning its
entire length, the CAC is an inspirational site. Incorporated in 1914 by
South End House Settlement, the CAC was the first public fine arts
museum designed exclusively for children. Over the years, the CAC became
a neighborhood landmark and for many years, it has brought fine arts and
cultural enrichment to children and families in the community regardless
of race, ethnic background, or ability to pay.
