Tiny Vibrant Pieces to Atmospheric Forms Represent this year’s Community Colors Exhibit

Four story brick building with adjacent courtyard

United South End Settlements announces its annual Community Colors exhibit on display at the Harriet Tubman Gallery November 12, 2013 – January 3, 2014. This collaborative exhibition will kick off with an opening reception on Tuesday November 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM which features over 40 pieces of art in a variety of 2D medium. This event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served.

Each participating artist incorporates aspects of their work that projects their unique experiences into the halls of the Harriet Tubman House. Some incorporate their rich histories of living in India, others explore the organic versus man made world; and then there are artists who triumph over diversity creating art as an expression of adverse conditions and those who continue to connect with their pre-retirement advocacy efforts of inclusion.

Age has no limit when it comes to community. Members submitted work that reflects a wide range of diversity from interdisciplinary mediums to all level of skill. The youngest artists are from USES’ Early Childhood Education program who worked collaboratively on a mosaic piece inspired by local artist Lisa Houck. The collection of tiny vibrant pieces shapes the composition into a dynamic metaphor reflecting the theme of Community Colors.

Local artist, Ann Turley, juxtaposes various techniques and uses a variety of materials to express themes such as conflict, personal fulfillment and mystery. In her multimedia piece, The Perfect Storm, the central transparent figure with his back to the viewer looks towards an elusive landscape. One may wonder if the marks and atmospheric forms behind him are his innermost thoughts, his past or just a landscape.

Although only 2D work is represented in the exhibition, there is no lack of materials. Work includes more traditional mediums such as oil paint, watercolor and acrylic interspersed with other mediums such as airbrush on metal, cut paper collage, pastels and fabric. Artist, Carol Daynard, for instance incorporates coffee, glitter and cardboard into a wonderful abstraction of the Himalayas.

Please, be our guest and visit the Harriet Tubman Gallery to view these works. Participating artists include Catherine Aiello, Elizabeth Belstraz, Gail Bos, Marilyn Jan Casey, Ryan Davis, Carol Daynard, USES’ Early Childhood Education Program Monicka Hasan, Kamilla and Tamsen Peralta-Virtue, Jo Ann Rothschild, Connie Saems, Rani Sarin, Helen Schroeder, Elisa Solignac, South End Head Start, Jeremiah Stevenson, and Ann Turley.
