Julia Glatfelter, a Vacation Arts Teacher from the summer of 2017, created these beautiful pieces during her time at USES and has made them available in support of the Children’s Art Centre. $10 from the sale of each print will benefit our youth arts programming. Through these works I hope to immortalize the precious history that lies within the walls of the Children’s Art Centre, as well as the impact that its art programs have had on the community for decades. I am hopeful that by unearthing the profound details of the Centre’s history, they might encourage others to experience the sacredness of this space and support its continued existence in their own way. The words of Joan FitzGerald Denney after her first visit to the sunny courtyard and reflective classroom resonate with me. She said that the history of the space seemed to “impregnate itself in the bricks, the ground, the air…” Certainly this remains true today.
Julia is a mixed media artist originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania. She studied Art Education at Gordon College and upon graduating, taught at the Children’s Art Centre as a Vacation Arts Teacher during the Summer of 2017. She is now actively building upon this series to develop a children’s literature book on the history of this South End landmark. Using the historic records archived at Northeastern University, she is weaving together the story of the nation’s first museum designed for children in a book designed for children. As she and her co-workers from the Vacation Arts program called it: ‘the real life fairytale’ of the Children’s Art Centre has a narrative that is rich and beautiful. Julia is honored to share it.
