United South End Settlements welcomes new Vice President of Programs Dolores Ortiz

Boston, Mass. (February 25, 2019) – United South End Settlements (USES) today welcomes Dolores Ortiz as its new Vice President of Programs, overseeing the following programs for families: Early Childhood Education, club48 after school programming, Camp Hale sleepaway summer camp, Training for Office Jobs, and Coaching. Additionally, she will provide guidance, supervision, and professional development to program staff.

Dolores has over 15 years of experience working in the non-profit and philanthropic sector. Over the last 10 years, she has designed, implemented, and managed programs with a particular focus on youth development. Most recently, she worked at Just-A-Start Corporation as the director of Youth Programs. Prior to that, she held roles in program innovation and development at BNY Mellon, Year Up Boston, and Organization for a New Equality.

“We’re very excited to have Dolores join our team. Her dedication to high-quality education programs inside and outside the classroom to achieve positive outcomes is aligned with our whole-family approach, which provides education and enrichment opportunities for children and their parents/caregivers to break the cycle of poverty,” said USES President and CEO Maicharia Weir Lytle.

While building her career, Dolores earned her Bachelor’s in Africana Studies and Sociology from Simmons University and her Masters in Macro Social Work from Boston University. She put herself through college while working full-time and raising two children.

“As a single parent, I relied on child care, enrichment, and safety services. Having an additional network of support helped me achieve my goals and in turn create a path for my children to become self-sufficient,” said Ortiz. “From my own experience, I know that USES’s whole-family approach helps reduce economic and other stressors. I look forward to working the dedicated team at USES and the children and families the organization serves.”

About United South End Settlements

United South End Settlements (USES) offers programs that holistically support families in achieving economic mobility. The nonprofit helps parents and caregivers develop their own capacity to reach their goals, increase their income and assets, and connect with new networks of people through one-on-one coaching and a workforce development program which prepares participants for administrative work as a first step on a career pathway. For children and youth, USES provides quality education and enrichment opportunities that foster personal development and social-emotional skills such as perseverance, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Each summer USES’s Camp Hale serves over 225 boys and girls, ages 6-17 years, with the goal of improving their sense of well-being, social skills, and awareness of personal potential. USES believes that as families increase their income and assets, become more resilient and connect to a diverse network, they and their children are more likely to develop the necessary skills to disrupt the cycle of poverty.
