Last week, the K-2 students took a short field trip over to the Children's Art Centre on Rutland St. Although we usually conduct the art classes in their own classrooms at the Hurley School, this year we will be having class in the CAC once a month or so. The art centre celebrated its centennial this year and was founded as the first fine arts museum in the country specifically designed for children. Today it houses many of United South End Settlements' youth arts programs, including Teen Art with the Hurley middle schoolers, after school art and our Vacation and Summer Arts Programs. You can read more about the fascinating history of the CAC and see photos from the archives here.

K-2 students worked in small groups (with an adult to help them!) to follow a recipe and make their own play dough! Students took turns measuring, adding and mixing the ingredients. Each group made a different color, then divided up their play dough to share with their classmates so that each child could take home a little bit of each color. Following recipes like this one helps students develop their math skills and understanding of sequence at the same time as they learn about color mixing and sculpting!
